Institution Features

We have choosen to use Summit Entertainment for our film. We chose Summit Entertainment because it fits well with our genre, and that is a thiller.

Summit Entertainment is an American film studio. Since 2006 Summit Entertainment has become an individual production company after working with Lions Gate and Universal. Summit expanded, so they started producing and co-financing film in 1995, and then they started fully financing films by 1997.

In 2006 Summit became a fully independent film studio, now known as Summit Entertainment. As Summit has worked with a range of gengres from films we thought using Summit Entertainment was a good one to choose for our film.
I think Summit Entertainment was a good choice for our production company because they have released films independently. They also have their own YouTube channel, so as teenagers and young adults know how to use the website and that is our target audience more people may see the film. I use YouTube all the time and always come across an film trailer add or video. As Summit is a big production comany they attracts a big audience, they worked with Twilight and other teen films so teens would want to see a film under this prodution company's name.
Also they have films with the same actors like Robert Pattersion from Twilight, was also in Remember me.

Films made by Summit Entertainment:

  • Keeping Mum
  • Lies & Alibis
  • Once
  • In the Valley of Elah
  • P2
  • The Hottie & the Nottie
  • Step Up2: The Streets
  • Penelope

  • The Twilight Saga (all five)
  • Remember Me

  • Red
  • The Impossible
  • Warm Bodies

This is what we be using in our film, good quality and this will be opening our film.

My character of Scarlet

Scarlet is a character I play, her character is dark, wearing colours of black, purple and red, and when getting ready white. She has dark brown hair and loves having her eyes with thick makeup. Scarlet lives in a small town with her friends Eva, Riley and Cassie.
Scarlet is 18, Eva 20, Cassie 17 and Riley 19, so as Scarlet is 18 she is allowed to go to parties with her friends.
As Scarlet is a dark character, its okay for her to be killed first, as we are aiming for a big target audience we won't have one of the main characters as a Goth/Emo.
She is meant to die at night because she is going to the party with her friends, they are all really close friends so they are always together. Scarlet is one of the people in the group that is always on her phone and always answers whenever someone calls or texts, with her friends she normally picks on the first ring. So when she doesn't pick up on the night they are meant to be going out the group gets worried.

As Scarlet is 18 she is allowed to do a lot of things and can do what she wants now, so it explains why she goes over top with her eye liner (also because of her style). She has the hair style where its all straight at the bottom and puffy at the top.

This is what my character looks like so you can see  a part of my hairstyle and how I look as a whole.

Mise-en-scene

This is our chat about the mise-en-scene. We talked about where our scenes are located and what they look like.
By looking at this we talk about all our rooms, talk about all what works, troubles, but talking about how to over come the problems we think about.

Animatics

The animatics is our stroy board of how we are going to shoot our film, how long frames last and so on.
It also tells us what Audio with be played. Also it tells you what entertainment we are using, which is summit views.
Not only that but it has helped us with what is meant to be in the scene. But the only problem from doing it, it has limited us in shots and different things we can do during the scene, some things havn't been successful in our filming, so our animatics is still correct but with slight changes.

Prop Log

We need props in our film, so we can do things we need to do in our film-

Props needed for every scene-
Knife
Phone X4
Fake Blood
White bed sheets
Alarm clocks
Mirrors X3
Mascara X2

In Scarlets scenes most props are used. First time we see Scarlet we see her putting on the song on her phone. Then when we next see her its when she is dead, this is when we see the white bed sheets as I am dead on them, the reason why we have white bed sheets is because when we use the fake blood (another prop) we can see it better and it look more effective than my original colour sheets. Also we then see the knife, this is when I get killed with and more fake blood, the killer is holding this prop and gives it away that something bad has happened.

The knife is used for the death of me, we ended up useing a fake knife to use for my death so no accidents are made.
We put the fake blood on my bed sheets so the death looks more messy and make it look more 'over the top'. Also we used the fake blood to put on my top so you can see where I was killed and how I was killed as you don't see the stabbing. Not only that but we also used the fake blood to put on the knife so you can see what I got killed with, also as the fake knife didn't look very real, so we covered it with fake blood, this made it look more real.
We used all four phones so we can call each other in the scene (scarlet doesn't talk on phone). So we use our phones in the scene and we talk about the party we are going to, they come to the concusion that something bad happens to me. There is a close of the phone ringing, and a far away shot to then see me dead.
We use the Alarm clock in Eva's scene where she is getting ready and looking at the time, as she is known to be the leader of the group so uses the alarm clock to call us to see if we are ready.
Most of us use mirrors in our scence, me(scarlet) Abi and Chantelle all use mirrors in their scene. We are all getting ready with them. In my scene there is two mirrors but I only use one and there is a dress hanging on the mirror.
Then only Chantelle and Abi's scenes have the Mascara, this is how their scenes link and work together.

Pictures-

In this picture this is the make-up my character wore in all scenes.

This is a picture what my bedroom looked like after adding the white bed sheets with fake blood.

This picture is of a close up of the fake blood on the bed sheets, we did this so we can make the death look better and messy.

This is a picture if my bedroom before we added any changes.

First part of filming- Scarlets Scenes

For my scences we had to film at night as the scence is meant to be late in the day. As it is dark in my room and the only light we had was my room light, the camera is grainy and hard to see a lot of detail. When filming this first time the camera to shaky to use so we have to redo the filming. Also when the killer walks out you cant even see him, so we need to add more light to this.
So what to do next time?
Well, to make the scene more interesting we need to add more cuts so we can kept the audeince interesting and it keeps moving.
So with me pressing play on the docking station we added more cuts instead of a slow zoom to the phone, this keeps the audeince interested and knowing my surrounding of the room.
Also as we couldn't get the shadow of the killer by my door, as I knew it was going to be a problem, we changed it so there was a hand on the door, so there still a change of fear.
Also with the phone ringing I am going to do more shots around the phone so its not just a long 5 seconds of the phone ringing in the same place.
Not only that but when I have been killed we have going to be having close ups and mid shots of me dead on the bed, this is to give surpise to the audeince that I died, also needing to re film it as the camera was to shakey first time. And finally with the killers scene walking out we are going to light up the hall way so you can see him walking out, as the first time we could see him at all.
Also costumes was changed, in the costume ideas we said I be wearing an orange vest top and black socks, when filming we changed the costumes so my orange vest wasn't used because I used a white vest top to die in. And I used wore blue socks when filming.
Hopefully from changing these things, the film will be more interesting with lots of different cuts and angles in the film.

These pictures are from the filming-

This is the white shirt we used for the filming, also next to it is the black leggings I used to wear in the scene.

In this photo we have added the fake blood to the costume, this is what im going to die in.

This is how bright my room was when we filmed first time-
This is the scene I die in, we have changed the bed covers so there is blood on them, we changed it it white so the blood will show up more.

Costume ideas

Every character in this film has their own character and style, and to do this we had to plan what each character wears and their stereotype.Megan who plays Scarlet, is wearing a orange or white vest top and black socks and leggings/jeans. The reason why she is wearing this because she is dying in this and she hasn't put on the black and white checkered dress that is still hanging up. We did this because we don't want to stain personal expressive clothing, so we did it so that we still see the dress, and how my personality is like and the stereotype of her character as we only have a sort time to show her character. The make-up the character is wearing dark eyes, with big black flicks on the eyes, and some dark eye shadow to show my personality as quite dark and a Goth/Emo stereotype. Then the character is wearing normal colour foundation, and pale pink lipstick. We was going to put this character up for black lipstick but we didn't because we thought it would make to much of an impact for my personality.

Daniel who will be playing the killer, is wearing a black hoodie, jeans and converses. With the killer wearing a black hoodie, it shows the mystery of the killer, because we do not know who he is or why he has killed Megan's character. you will be able to tell the killer is male because of the clothes worn and big, broad shoulders.

Chantelle who plays Eva, is wearing a black laced zip up dress, and orange platforms. We put her in this costume because she is going to a party, and we wanted to put her in a laced black dress, because it seems for formal as she is the lead girl in the film, and older. She is also wearing platforms, because she is going to a party, so the shoes, this also makes her taller, which makes her stand out against the other girls.
Chantelle's make-up has smokey brown eye make-up, natural lip colour, lashes and thick mascara. She will be wearing this make-up because as she is the leader she needs to look more grown up and not other the top make-up like the other in the group.

Abigail who plays Riley, is wearing a cream with black polka dots on the top half and black bottom zip up dress with black sandals. We wanted to have her wear this costume, because she to is going to a party and this also shows her girly personality because she is wearing a dress.
Abigail's make-up will consist of natural foundation, eyeliner, fake lashes, thick mascara and pink lipstick. This make-up shows her girly personality, because it is so thick and bright, it also is not to much because, her foundation is her skin tone, compared to the average girly girl, that will have orange foundation. Having Abigail's character wear fake lashes and thick mascara, brings out her eyes, so you know by looking at her that she is a girly girl.

Kimberley who plays Cassie, is wearing a dress which is leopard print at the chest and black from the waist down, it is also short at the front and long at the back. She will also be wearing leopard print high heels. We put her in this costume, because she has quite a slutty personality, I find that this costume shows her personality well because it is quite full on, and with the high heels it makes the outfit look more slutty in a way. Also with Cassie wearing a dress with leopard print just on the chest area, brings more attention in the chest area, which must be her aim as she is going to a party, so tit shows her slutty personality.
Kimberley make-up will consist of blusher, natural foundation, eyeliner, thick mascara and bright red lipstick. This make-up is also portraying her personality again because her make-up is full on. With her wearing thick mascara, it brings out her eyes and she is wearing red lipstick, so that also brings out her lips, because red is such a bold slutty colour especially when it is used as lipstick.

The role of Characters

The character of Scarlet is played by Megan Voisey.
The role for her in the film opening is one of the girls getting ready for a party. This character is the one that makes the film opening to the mystery, and the start of the film to be dark and scary!
My personality is something called a Grundger, this is were a person has a dark look and it into most things a Goth would be into, but they also can wear casual clothes. It is okay to have my character as a stereotype Grundger because as I'm not a main character is doesn't matter as much, so we are not targeting a small audience if I was a main character.
My character doesn't have a lot of time to show her personality, because I die at the beginning of the film, but to show my style I have a gothic looking dress hanging on my mirror, to show my personality. My age of my character in the film is 18.

The character of Eva is played by Chantelle Roberts.
The role for her in the film opening is the one who phones up everyone and to see if they are ready, using the three way call. She is the most popular person in the group and looks the most casual and has a nice common style, as she is a main character we need to drag a large target audience that relates to her character. She is also the oldest in the group so she is also seen as the leader of our group. Her age in the film is 20.

The character of Riley played by Abigail Morey.
Rileys character is the girly girl in the group and at the beginning she is wearing a dress that has come from Select (big target audience because of a main shop people use). The character of this character is 19.

The character of Cassie played by Kimberley Dalton.
The character of Cassie in the film is the slut in the group, and the youngest of all of us. At the beginning she is wearing a leopard print dress, and most people in the audience can relate to that style. She wears bright red lip stick, and has more of a slutty look to the rest of us. She is another main character in the movie, and her style is a big impact on the film, as she is the one that survives at the end. The character of Kim is 17.

Target Audience Demographic

We have a target audience, so we needed to make sure the target audience we want viewing the film will appeal to them the most.
To get the target audience we want, which is teens to young adults we need actors in the same age range which can relate. We have split the audience into 4 groups to help us analyse different aspects.
Which are-

-16-18 girls
-16-18 boys
-18-24 girls
-18-24 boys

The age of the 16-18 girls we needed to know what they are into. Most 16-18 year old girls are into make-up, boys and partying. We where able to link them in with a party to start the film. Also there are different sort of groups in the 16-18 space, which is stereotypes groups, were girls have friendship groups of their stereotype e.g- popular girls, nerdy girls, goth girls. To get a wide range of a target audience each of our character have different stereotypes in the film. It also helps because our character are the ranges 18-20.
It can appeal to 16-18 girls because its what 16s can look forward to (parties), and 18s where they can relate.

The age of 16-18 boys can also appeal to them. We used a thriller as a genre because boys would much rather see a thriller film and not a chick flick (so good for a date). And we have used the element of partying and teens at their age like and want to party, so we are able to drag both genders to this film. No only that but attractive girls are in the film, so boys would want to come to see attractive girls.

The age 18-24 girls can also watch this film, it can link into them and can appeal to them. They can look back on party moments, but have a bad twist in our story line. Also we have an actor, acting the age 20, so we still have the same age range. Also as we know the large age range to go to the cinema is 18-24 year olds its good to target them.

The age 18-24 year old boys can go to watch this thriller because boys like thrillers, and as there is a good story line it can keep them entertained. Also the boys can watch it with friends, girlfriends or when they don't need to go into work.

So we have been able to get a whole range of people 16-24, both ages into this film, as it is a wide target audience the film can be successful. However, this can differ from target audience because other people out of our target range could want to see this film.

World War Z Review

World War Z

The new zombie film of 2013 has struck my heart and my passion for zombies, this action packed film takes Shaun of the Dead right off the market, this is the film to buy!
If you love zombie then this film is for you!
The film starts as a normal day, but within 15 minutes of the film starting, action and fear starts, filling the whole film with a chance to survive and trying to cure this disease.
There are amazing parts in the film and the actors go off to fight the infected and survives the most heart pounding events.
Camera Angles and CGI effects are perfect in this film, you get a perfect birds eye view when you see zombie climbing up the walls of the safe area.
Giving my view on the film I give it 5/5 stars because it is seriously one of the best zombie films for a long time.
However, this doesn’t have much blood and gore in this film, so this film is nothing like 28 days later. Also World War Z has got a few jump scares in it, so be prepared and hold your popcorn tightly!
This action packed zombie film will leave you on the edge of your seat and tension is thick in the air when walking with the dead.
On the other hand the only problem with this film there isn’t really a good plot to it, there’s enough zombie and edge of seat moments but not a lot of things take you by surprise.
Also there’s not much comedy, it’s mostly serious, unlike Shaun of the Dead and Zombie Land, so if you like comedy then this film wouldn’t really make you laugh.
I like this film because its action packed and has enough zombie and tension to keep me entertained and amazed.
If you love zombies or action, join the experience and buy World War Z on blue ray or DVD, coming soon to shops near you.

Music for Movie

Setting the scene with music-

For our film opening we were having troubles finding good songs to have in the opening. We released we couldn't have a love song in out opening scene because someone is going to die, so we needed to set a scene.
As we are getting ready for a party we needed some up beat music but also sad.
We choose some songs, like Summer Time Sadness by Lana Del Rey, but the covers were to slow and didn't really fit. We also tried Wake me up inside by Evanescence, but covers were to bad quality and wasn't a wide range. We were disappointed that we couldn't have this song because it fitted well.

However, we found other covers of another band called Paramore. We found good covers that were upbeat.
We chose a song from them called Decode, famous by Paramore and has featured in the film Twilight in 2008.
In this we found a cover by MEMELii, that has done a good quality cover. We are going to use this song we are getting ready. We did find other covers but they were rather to slow or didn't fit the scene.

We have chosen two songs, one for the beginning when we are getting ready, and another when you see me dead. We are still having trouble finding the second song but we do have a good one by The Weeknd- Valerie (piano cover). This is the one we have liked but it hasn't be confirmed.
We did change the song in the end, we changed it to Lana Del Rey Young and Beautiful. So we found a good cover by The Theorist.
After editing the filming, we noticed this song didn't work, even though it was sad it didn't fit the emotion of the scene and me being dead. So we didn't know what song to pick. So we have chosen to make our own music, we went on something called Garage Band, where you can make your own tunes  and music! I have beening makeing the song for the dieing scene and we will use this in our film.

The first part of our music is going to be Diegetic music, because I turn on my phone to hear music when I'm getting ready (Paramore Decode). The music is going to be diegetic for my character and Kims character (Cassie), after the next shot when it goes to Abi's character (Riley), just the music is going to be more of a overlap so sound is going on, so its be Non-diegetic for her and Chantelle character (Eva).
After I get killed there will be the music track that I made, this is going to be Non-diegetic music for all character, so the audience will feel sorry for the character becasue it is sad.

Paramore Decode Cover- MEMELii
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgRPbiPauOo

Lana Del Rey Young and Beautiful cover- The Theorist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57YkGFK7CDA

We have also made our own music for when the title comes up, there is two ideas, still don't know which one we are choosing.
After thinking we decided to go with Chantelle's song for the title, this is also done on Garage Band.

The Preliminary Task

With Myself, Abi, Chantelle and Kim.

The Preliminary Task-

Our first preliminary task had lots of errors and other problems during the recording. We did not notice them until we were editing our video.
Our first error we found was that while we were filming a lawn mower was in the background, and it was really loud during our filming, so you cant hear some speech as much. Also as we where cutting it together the sound of the lawn mower seemed far away in other shots.
Then while we were editing we spotted that we can see our 'camera man' in the reflection of the window, so its a big error.

So how will we sort out the problem???

If we re-film we will do it indoors, so any sound outdoors will be less noticeable, and we wont have wind as a noise.
Also we will change the angle of where our 'camera man' will be so we wont get the reflection of the window.

Things we learnt-

We learnt something called the 180 degree rule. This is where the camera has to be on one side so the camera wont be if different places for each shot. Also we learnt shot-reverse-shot, this is what we used when the conversation was taking place. Finally we learnt match on action, this is where we got the door opening matching on each shot.

Mini film planning

My film idea

Who's Next?-

Our soon to be shot movie!
Group-
Megan (Myself) as Scarlet
Kimberley as Casey
Chantelle as Eva
Abigail as Riley

We are doing a new film called whos next, with myself and friends.
In the first 2 minutes of the film (what we need to film) we are all getting ready for a party. We start of with me, putting on make-up, with a figure standing in my door way, the figure is a male with a hoodie on holding a knife in my house.
Then it shoots to my friends who will also being putting on makeup and putting on dresses. Then Eva is all ready and wants to call everyone to see if everyone is ready. She calls Riley and Casey, a three way call. Then Eva calls Scarlet, we zoom in on the phone ringing but I be dead on the bed, seeing the killer walk away with a bloody knife.
Then the title will come up 'Who's Next?' and it will cut to Eva, Riley and Casey.

Institution

Institution-

Institution is something that controls a way of how we live and the rules that we follow. For example school is another huge Institution, we follow their rules and how we live.
But no only is our social lives are around Institution, its our free time, what movies we watch and what music we listen to, it all one company! So for example SONY owns all little companies such as Colombia films.
So its like Conglomerate, a company which owns more than one type of media.
Also institution is something we grow up with its what we know best. So for example we know Walt Disney as princesses and Happily ever afters, but when Walt Disney wants to go and create a new type of film without soiling their known Fairy Tales stories, they just make a new company with a new name. So everything that we watch and listen to, its all connected to one big Media Company.

So Walt Disney is the one of the biggest companies in the world!

Other companies Disney own-
Walt Dinsey Pictures
Pixar
Touchstone Pictures
Marvel
History Channel
Miramax films
abc channel

The abc Channel is a very big company in the USA and is owned by Walt Disney. These make shows such as Dancing with the Stars and Shark Tank.

Touchstone Pictures is also owned by Walt Disney and does a range of different films for all ages, from Gnomeo and Juliet to Lincoln.

Pixar works close with Walt Disney as it does lots of animated films such as Toy Story and Monster Inc.
